Alkali Wash

WHY IS IT NEEDED?

New Installations typically contain grease, swarf and debris that will have gathered in pipework during fabrication. This dirt and foreign matter should be removed before a system is put into service, otherwise the dirt may lodge itself in a valve, meter or probe on the line causing costly damage.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A ALKALI WASH & PRE-CLEAN?

The Pre-Clean and Alkali Wash involves removing the foreign mater such as greese and swarf from the pipe internals.

THE PROCESS

Firstly the pipework is flushed with water, this will remove any swarf and loose dirt in the line. An Alkali solution containing a detergent and surfactant is re-circulated through the system, the alkalinity breaks up the oil and greese and the surfactant disperses it.

WHAT SHOULD BE PRE-FLUSHED AND DE-GREASED?

New Boilers should be pre-cleaned and de-greased prior to being brought on line to remove any foreign matter that may cause damage while in operation. Hot Water Pipework on closed loop systems such as domestic hot water heating systems.
